It’s Official — Science Says That Taking a Trip With Your Girlfriends Is Good For Your Health

We here at the Vintage Shop Hop know all about what great fun it is to road trip with your gal pals!! Now here's proof! Our next event is March 6 & 7, 2020 and again October 2 & 3, 2020--

Grab your friends. Hit the road. Shop hard.

According to TIPHERO's website...

We all want to invest in our health. But it turns our we’re all probably not taking advantage in the best way that we could.
We typically think we’re being healthy when we make ourselves kale salads or hit the gym a few times a week—and we are. While these habits are great, there are other, more fun ways to stay healthy.
Traveling, for example.
But people aren’t taking enough vacations. In fact, Americans wasted 658 million vacation days in 2015, meaning more than half of working Americans didn’t use their allotted paid time off.
People often put vacationing aside, whether it’s because they think they can’t afford it or that they’re worried their job is too demanding to leave for a period of time. But it’s actually super important to be able to take a mini break and travel, especially with friends.

Benefits of having a close group of friends

Southern Living has recently reported that taking a trip with your best gal pals can improve your overall mental and physical well-being. It can refresh you when your burnt out on work, plus give you quality time with the people who you love most.
This isn’t the first time having a good social network or traveling has been proven to help our health. According to the Mayo Clinic, having a close group of friends can make you feel less lonely, help you cope with bad experiences in your life, reduce stress, and boost your mood and overall happiness, among other benefits.
Physically, a happy social life can benefit our health as well. The Mayo Clinic also says that having friends is linked to a reduced risk of depression, high blood pressure and an unhealthy body mass index. They may even help you prolong your life!
“Keeping a few really good friends around can make a world of difference for our health and well-being,” said psychologist William Chopik from Michigan State University. “So, it’s smart to invest in the friendships that make you happiest.”
On the opposite end of the spectrum, those without close connections may suffer poorer health, such depression, cognitive decline, and not living as long.

Where travel comes in

Traveling has also been proven to boost your health. Forbes reports that women who take advantage of vacation time are less tense, depressed or tired, and have even showed to be happier with their spouse. Their mood is better, and it can even improve productivity and creativity.
On the contrary, not taking trips can contribute to a higher risk of heart disease and death from heart disease for women. Even for men, traveling can reduce the risk of death by 21 percent and mortality from cardiovascular disease by 32 percent.
It makes sense that when you put together good friendships and travel and the health benefits are vast.
So what are you waiting for? Grab your besties, pick an awesome destination, and pack your bags!

Vintage Shop Hop--what is it?

Updated  8/01/19:

Are you an Illinois or Wisconsin vintage shopping hound? Do you love to ROAD TRIP with your girlfriends?

In our 6th year, the Vintage Shop Hop is now "Semi-Annual"!!!! Our next shopping event is scheduled for Friday and Saturday,October 4 & 5, 2019. Hailed as the mother lode of all vintage road trips it's a self-guided two days to any number of the 500+ participating VINTAGE shops, BOUTIQUES, BARN SALES, ODDITY SHOPS & HOME DECOR STORES throughout northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.

WE provide the master list of participating shops, and YOU grab your friends and hit the road! You will find farmhouse chic, industrial and automotive relics, architectural salvage, barn wood, piles of windows & doors, vintage & new boutique clothing, boho decor, jewelry old and new, cottage finds, cabin goods, fun junk, collectibles, and everything to deck out your she shed, man cave or outdoor bar!

Each year the shop owners roll out the red carpet for you by hosting a fun promotion inside their store. It might be anything from chalk paint demonstrations to jewelry making demo or music on site or a parking lot sale. Some offer a "pop the balloon" to determine your discount. Some give away gift bags to the first people in the store each day. It's entirely up to the shop owner to decide what their promotion is...but all make it worth it! They also set their own hours.  Some shops continue their offers a day before and a day after the official event dates.  Their typical store hours are to open at 9 or 10am and closing at 5pm or after. Be sure to check the list or map for exact hours of each shop.

We suggest you take a look at the list as it grows, and decide if you want to shop in your own backyard or venture out a little further and make a day or weekend of it. Then, take a few minutes to check out the shops' Facebook pages, check their hours, and route out your day! Maybe even spend the night and do it all over again the second day!!

Follow our Facebook page often where you'll find all the details, all the fun flyers with details on those who organize town-wide events--and other appropriate posts from the shops themselves. So check our page every day! There's an interactive Google Map every year! You can click/tap the map locators and see detail information on each shop. That means while you're out on the road, you can open the map to see what your next shop will be...and that works year 'round. Just open your Google Maps, go to MY MAPS and it will be listed there forever!

A MASTER LIST OF SHOPS and interactive GOOGLE MAP will be found on the page tabs at the top of this page...even after the event! If you are viewing this on a smartphone, you may have to tap the HOME button on your screen to see the page tabs.

To participate you must own a vintage shop, vintage event or women's boutique in northern Illinois or southern Wisconsin. The map tab will give you the general idea of boundaries the event covers. If you're in a rural area without many vintage shops, we can allow other shops. Contact us first. No box stores, no national chains, no thrifts, no floral shops, or resale shops unless you have a devoted vintage section. Registration begins on January 1 and August 1 every year and ends two weeks before the event.  Please go HERE to register your shop. The registration fee to participate is $45 per business for "Early Bird" until August 10 at 5pm...then it's $65 after that until September 20 at 5pm.

Extend your Road Trip experience by making it a full weekend with friends. Check out your options--many rural areas now have AirB&Bs or bed & breakfast inns to make your stay cozy and fun. Click below links for details.
